Family Dinners Provide Holiday Cheer for Oklahoma's Children

Monday, December 10, 2012 - Campus News -

On December 19th and 20th Children's Hospital Foundation will provide Christmas dinners to Children's Hospital patients and their families in The Children's Atrium through a grant provided by Presbyterian Health Foundation. Volunteers from Chesapeake Energy and members of the Children's Hospital Foundation Board of Directors will serve over 150 meals to families awaiting crucial medical miracles during this holiday season.

The Christmas dinners will bring family and friends together for a joyful evening. "This magical time of year is highly anticipated by children of all ages and we are grateful for the donors and volunteers who make events like this possible," said Kathy McCracken, Children's Hospital Foundation Executive Director.

On Wednesday, December 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Christmas dinner will be served by volunteers from Chesapeake Energy Corporation. Santa and few of his elves will be in attendance enjoying entertainment from the Community Jazz Orchestra.

The following night, Thursday, December 20th from 5:00 pm. to 6:30 p.m., Christmas dinner will be served to children and their families by members of the CHF Board of Directors. Holiday carols and a warm Christmas meal will fill all who attend with holiday cheer.

"Many years ago during our young son's lengthy battle with leukemia, we spent several Christmas seasons with him confined to the hospital. Frequently however, there would be volunteers show up to help brighten the days and those times helped make the holiday hospital stays more pleasant," said Joe Lewallen CHF Board member. "I've now had the opportunity to give back by being on the other side of things and joining with my family to serve a holiday meal to the patients of Children's Hospital and their families, and it is more meaningful than one can even imagine. Seeing these grateful kids and their parents and siblings get a chance to enjoy a little of the holiday spirit and take their mind off of their problems for a little while makes you realize how much we all take for granted, and most importantly, helps us all know the real meaning of Christmas."

For children who will be unable to leave their rooms, meals will be packaged and delivered to them by volunteers.

Children's Hospital Foundation helps to fund pediatric research, education and clinical care, ultimately supporting The Children's Hospital in serving every county in Oklahoma with more than 162,000 annual patient visits. All funds raised through Children's Hospital Foundation stay in Oklahoma so children will have access to exceptional pediatric specialists without having to leave the state.  Despite dedicated and steady progress, there are still obstacles in the quest to combat pediatric illness and disability.
