OU Medicine Names Section Chief of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine

Trent E. Tipple, M.D., board-certified neonatologist, has been named chief of the Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.

Tipple is board certified in pediatrics with sub-specialty certification in neonatal-perinatal medicine. He also is a professor of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and holds the Children’s Hospital Foundation Reba McEntire Endowed Chair in Neonatology. He is an expert in redox biology, lung development and lung injury/repair, with a long history of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Tipple comes to The Children’s Hospital from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, where he most recently served as director of the Neonatal Redox Biology Laboratory, associate director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program and physician lead for Family Centered Care Initiative in the Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

Originally from rural Wabash County, Indiana, Tipple earned his undergraduate degree in biology at Butler University, Indianapolis, and his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in general pediatrics and fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

Tipple has served in a wide range of leadership roles on national and international boards and steering committees, including the National Institutes of Health, National Kidney Foundation of America and United Network for Organ Sharing. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Thoracic Society, Perinatal Research Society, Society for Pediatric Research, American Physiological Society and Society for Redox Biology and Medicine.
